In probably one of the most important books ever written on self-improvement, James Allen in “As a man thinketh” lays down how thoughts are at the core of defining every aspect of my life.
From that book, I summarize few key phrases that stood out for me:
They themselves are makers of themselves
James argues that through the virtue of my thoughts which I choose and encourage, my mind is the master weaver of the inner garment of character & outer garment of circumstance.
He paints a picture that I can easily change which garment I choose to wear — today I may be wearing a garment woven in ignorance & pain. But tomorrow, I can easily switch to a garment woven in enlightenment and happiness — just through my thoughts.
My actions spring from my thoughts.
James compares every act I take as akin to a plant that springs from a seed. Whether the acts are “spontaneous” and unpremeditated or deliberately executed, all my actions arise out of hidden seeds of thought.
If I seek, I will find.
James defines the one ‘absolute law’ — “If I knock, doors will be opened for me”. But I must do the knocking. The seeking. I can garner a better understanding…
